Treating Mind and Spirit as One

Kelly Murphy Mason

Kelly Murphy Mason, PsyD, MDiv, LCSW

Kelly Murphy Mason is a clinical pastoral psychotherapist wholly committed to psychological and spiritual integration. As both a licensed clinician and ordained minister, she seeks to provide her clients emotionally literate, psychologically sound, and spiritually informed psychotherapy. She received her doctorate from the Graduate Theological Foundation, her dual masters from Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary, and her undergraduate degree from Harvard College. In recent years, she has occupied a host of positions throughout metropolitan New York – in higher education, as well as in different faith communities and counseling centers. On the staff of PSI, she serves as its Managing Director and also as a clinical supervisor.

Dr. Mason is trained in CISD interventions, Emotionally Focused Therapy, PREPARE/ENRICH couples counseling, and the EMDR treatment of trauma. She works with adolescents, adults, and elders from diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds. Her clients have included working artists, fellow clinicians, and clergypersons from various traditions. She has a particular interest in the concerns of women and BGLTQ clients and also extensive experience in working with people in Twelve-Step recovery programs. Interfaith couples are a specialty of hers at PSI.

Her holistic approach honors the connections between body, soul, and mind; more than a decade ago, she was certified as a yoga instructor and registered with the Yoga Teachers Alliance. Dr. Mason teaches ‘resource tapping’ and meditative techniques for self-soothing and improved mood. She addresses personality type, temperament, and attachment style explicitly in the therapeutic endeavor, acknowledging people’s individual preferences and signature strengths.

Dr. Mason assists her clients in developing a stronger self-concept and fuller understanding of the choices they have made and continue to make in their lives. A former client once characterized her therapeutic role as ‘the voice of what is real.’

An experienced educator, Dr. Mason teaches at the Fordham University Graduate School of Religion, Union Theological Seminary, and at the Spirituality Mind Body Institute at Columbia University Teachers College, as well as for the PSI Summertime Certificate Program.  From 2011-2013, Dr. Mason acted as Pastoral Counselor for Union Theological. In addition, she served as Curriculum Co-Chair of the Association for Spirituality & Psychotherapy. Prior to that, she was a Director of Pastoral Care & Counseling Programs at the historic Blanton Peale Institute, where she taught on the faculty, supervised students, and worked for years as a staff therapist. From 2015-2017, she also served as the In Care/In Covenant Coordinator for Unitarian Universalist seminarians in metropolitan New York.

Today Dr. Mason acts as a guest preacher and mental-health consultant to area faith groups. She offers public programs, seminars, and workshops exploring the intersections between spiritual wisdom and psychological insight. Her essays and articles have appeared in The Week, Slate Magazine, and The Washington Post Book World, as well as in volumes of the Encyclopedia of Psychology & Religion and essay anthologies.

Recent interviews with her have been featured by the Interfaith Center of NY, Trinity Church Wall Street, and the NY Daily News. Dr. Mason is a professional member of both the EMDR International Association and the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy, as well as a Qualified Clinical Social Worker in the National Association of Social Workers and a certified Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.
