2018 Certificate Program

The Psychotherapy & Spirituality Institute will be partnering with the Interfaith Center of New York to offer our 2018 certificate program in Spiritually-Informed Psychotherapy.  PSI has taken an interdisciplinary approach to mental health and spiritual wholeness for more than 40 years.  Our six-week, 12-module, 18-hour course, will explore the many ways spiritually informed approaches can improve treatment outcomes across a range of mental-health disciplines.

Our summer program gives qualified clinicians an opportunity to undertake a structured and sustained study of the many intersections between spiritual wisdom and psychological insight. In a seminar setting, students will consider a wide array of topics relevant to practice, incorporating spiritual perspectives into each.

Classroom conversations will be led by expert teachers, who are all licensed professionals with a substantive background in handling both spiritual and clinical concerns.  Assigned readings, experiential exercises, and discussion questions will give students the chance to explore the material in an intimate learning environment, while a final integrative paper will allow the students to apply what they have learned.

Overall objectives of the program include better acquainting licensed mental health providers with spiritually informed approaches and also in assisting them in determining how those can best be incorporated into their mental health practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Conceptualizing the intersubjective spirituality that informs the clinical encounter
  • Developing a range of spiritual assessments and interventions
  • Understanding spiritual perspectives on distinct clinical concerns like intimacy and addiction
  • Expanding spiritual resources available to clinicians, both personally and professionally

Our Faculty

PSI has an interdisciplinary faculty comprised of PSI staff and spiritual practitioners from the wider clinical community, including clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, creative arts therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, and pastoral counselors.  Our instructors come from a variety of faith backgrounds, including Buddhist, Christian, and Jewish.

While the PSI faculty is a multidisciplinary one, great care is taken to underscore that spiritually-informed psychotherapy may only be done within each professional’s scope of practice. NY State LMSWs, LCSWs, LMHCs and LMFTs are eligible for 18.0 CE’s.  Overall objectives of the program include better acquainting licensed mental health providers with spiritually informed approaches and also in assisting them in determining how those can best be incorporated into their mental health practice.
