Innate Wisdom, Lasting Growth
Celebrating 50 years
PSI has been at the forefront of spiritually-integrated psychotherapy since 1975. We have always been dedicated to providing accessible, inclusive, and transformative care. In times of challenge and change, we have stood as a source of healing, support, and resilience. As we look to the future, we remain committed to expanding our reach, enriching our impact, and ensuring that spirituality continues to be an integral part of mental health care for all.
Highlights
1975: A group of practitioners joined together to create The Center for Human Development. The Center was founded around one central mission: to advocate for the powerful role spirituality can play in addressing mental health concerns.
1997: The Counseling and Human Development Center changed its name to the Psychotherapy & Spirituality Institute. Practitioners at PSI continued their mission of bringing spirituality and therapy together, rooted in a deep commitment to offering inclusive, nondenominational, and integrative therapy.
1980s: As the AIDs crisis hit New York City, PSI became a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community to speak openly about the trauma they were facing.
2001: After the shock of 9/11, PSI’s therapy provided critical support to many New Yorkers navigating the trauma and devastation of the attack, as well as the heightened stress and anxiety that followed. PSI therapists played a vital role in addressing the spiritual crises of first responders, offering them a space to process their grief, resilience, and search for meaning in the aftermath.
2020: From the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, PSI responded to the growing isolation and distress experienced by New Yorkers by expanding access to care. The team implemented virtual therapy options, ensuring continuity of support even during lockdown. PSI also launched online clinical training for mental health professionals and provided consultations for spiritual communities and leaders facing compassion fatigue, fostering resilience in those offering care to others.
PSI through the years

Envisioning our future
Looking ahead, we’re excited to broaden our impact. Our vision for the future includes expanding access to clinical care, professional training, and community partnerships. We are committed to:
- Enhancing clinicians’ ability to integrate spirituality into their practice through additional clinical training programs;
- Providing affordable, accessible care, ensuring that financial constraints never stand in the way of healing;
- Expanding our training program for clinical interns and limited-permit therapists;
- Developing and collaborating with a robust network of practitioners who share our commitment to spiritually-informed care;
- Bringing PSI’s training to a broader range of organizations—including medical settings, corporations, nonprofits, and spiritual communities—in order to introduce spiritually-integrated practices to diverse professionals.
We can’t do this work alone. Please consider making a donation to our John Kamas Emergent Fund to help us extend our reach and our offerings. With your help, we can continue to bring spirituality to the forefront of conversations about mental health.
